Shannon obtained her PhD at The University of Sydney Australia, focussing on the function of neurotransmitter transporters and their interactions with lipids.

She was awarded an EMBO Long Term Fellowship to join Imperial College London and investigate macrophage receptors, where she now works in the research group of Professor Doryen Bubeck studying the role of pore forming proteins in bacterial colonisation and intraspecies competition.
