Travelling by train in Italy

Depending on where you are staying, the closest station to the town centre is Prato Porta al Serraglio. However, Prato Centrale is closer to Art Hotel Milano, Hotel President and B&B Hotels Prato.

The train service is operated by Trenitalia, the national train company, and Italo:, a private company. Tickets can be bought online, at the station or from a tobacconist.

If you buy your ticket at the station or from a tobacconist, it is essential to validate the ticket before boarding the train using the green and white machines at the station or on the platform, which stamps the date and time. Once validated, the ticket is valid for 4 hours.

If you forget to validate your ticket or check-in online, inform the conductor as soon as you board the train. Failure to do so will result in a fine.

Digital tickets (purchased online) for regional trains will automatically validate at the scheduled departure time of the purchased train ticket. It is no longer necessary to check in.

There is also the Omio app for booking trains, buses and ferries in Italy.
